The Cost of a Laugh
Carljoe Javier’s take on the “Willing Willie” issue. This is probably the best written commentary on the matter. Here’s my favorite part:
It’s not only social, political, and economic reforms that must be instituted, but also cultural reforms. We must also improve the kind of cultural products that are created. We must have popular cultural content that amuses and entertains that is better than variety show hosts waving monetary rewards in poor people’s faces in exchange for their humiliation, or as Mr. Revillame’s defenders like to put it, their opportunity to showcase their “special talents.”
